Understanding Strains and Sprains

Strains and sprains are both injuries to the connective tissues that surround, reinforce, or articulate a joint. The main difference between these two injuries is the specific type of tissue involved. A sprain is a stretching, twisting, or tearing of a ligament, a tough connective tissue that attaches one bone to another while still allowing for movement. A strain involves the tearing or stretching of a tendon or muscle. Tendons attach muscles to bones so that when the muscles contract or relax, a body part will move at the joint.

Strains and sprains may exhibit many of the same symptoms, including sharp or dull pain at the injury site, swelling, and difficulty moving the joint. But, sprains may also show bruising at the injury site, while strains may include muscle spasms among their symptoms. Sprains generally occur as the direct result of the joint being suddenly and violently overstressed. The twisting of an ankle joint is one of the common sprain injuries. Strains may also occur as acute injuries, or they may develop gradually due to constant overuse of the tissues. Repetitive motions at work or in sports, for example, can cause tiny tears to accumulate in muscles or tendons until you experience chronic inflammation.
