What Is Sciatica?

Lumbosacral radicular syndrome or sciatica is caused by the irritation of your sciatic nerve. This nerve begins in the lower spine or lumbar and ends in your thigh. In general, those who suffer from sciatica may experience pain in their hip and buttocks that radiates to the thigh. This pain can be a dull, deep pain or it can be a sharp, shooting pain. Ranging from a severity of mild to severe, sciatic nerve pain can be debilitating.

What Is Pregnancy Sciatica?

For pregnant women, sciatic nerve pain is caused by lumbar spin complications, such as a herniated disc or bulging disc. Pregnancy sciatica can also be caused by changes in the bone, such as:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Stenosis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spondylolisthesis

All of these conditions place extra stress on the sciatic nerve, which causes symptoms. While sciatica caused by a herniated disc isn't common during pregnancy, women who have lower back pain in pregnancy are likely to develop sciatic-like symptoms. Anywhere from 50 up to 80% of women suffer from back pain during pregnancy. Pregnancy sciatic symptoms can also be caused by unstable joints and muscle tension.

What Are the Symptoms of Pregnancy Sciatica?

Pregnancy sciatica can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Pins and needles, numbness, or weakness in the impacted foot or leg
  • Constant or occasional pain on a side of your leg or buttocks
  • Shooting, sharp, or burning pain
  • Pain and discomfort along the path of the sciatic nerve, which is from your buttocks down the rear of your thigh to your foot
  • Pain and discomfort when you stand, walk or sit
