Causes and Effects of Joint Pain

Some joints are more complex and mobile than others. A simple joint might permit limited motion at best, while others work as hinges or ball-and-socket assemblies to help you walk, run, use your hands or twist your spine. The most complex joints, such as the TMJ on each side of the jaw, can allow for movement in multiple directions at once. The more complex the joint structure, however, the more working parts are involved, and the higher the chance of mechanical problems interfering with joint function. Two main categories of joint pain include:

    • Acute joint pain - Sharp, sudden joint pain tends to occur as the direct result of an illness or injury. Examples might include a torn rotator cuff, ruptured knee ligament, or dislocated vertebral joints caused by a sports accident or auto accident impact. Infections or autoimmune problems may cause acute bouts of rheumatoid arthritis.
    • Chronic joint pain - Chronic joint pain is an extremely common problem, especially as advancing age encourages progressive, irreversible joint damage. Osteoarthritis due to cartilage degeneration is a classic example. Degenerative disc disease and untreated spinal alignment problems can cause or worsen joint pain in any or all of the weight-bearing joints.

Chiropractic Care and Other All-Natural Answers

Instead of simply "doping" your pain with drugs, turn to chiropractic care as a joint pain treatment option. Your chiropractor at our clinic can determine whether your pain stems from positional problems in the joint itself or from other alignment issues that need correcting. Chiropractic adjustments to the joints can help them operate more smoothly and easily. Spinal adjustments can improve your symmetry and balance, taking unnatural strain off of joints. We can also treat soft tissue pain through massage, laser therapy, acupuncture, and other drug-free techniques.
