Concussions: How They Are Treated and Happen

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is usually referred to as a concussion. It’s a word you’ve likely heard countless times when thinking about sports like football, but there are different ways in which you can suffer a concussion. Concussions don’t just affect the brain, either, as neck pain usually goes hand in hand with a TBI. If you have been diagnosed with a concussion, there are treatments that we use at West Omaha Chiropractic & Sports Injury Clinic that can help ease the pain.

Causes

The most common way to suffer a concussion involves an auto accident. In addition, wearing a seatbelt causes your head to move forward while the rest of the body does not. This action results in whiplash, neck pain, and a chiropractor. A sports injury is another common concussion, even in non-contact sports.

Symptoms

Even if you feel fine at first, you may have suffered a concussion without knowing it. Some symptoms you need to look out for outside of a regular headache include:

  • Dizziness
  • Vision problems
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Nausea
  • Loss of memory

These symptoms can be mild at best, but if they’re present, the likelihood you have suffered a concussion is high.

Treatment

While emergency services will perform neurological and cognitive exams for your brain, that still leaves the question of your neck pain after a concussion. In most cases, our chiropractor can help with physical and massage therapy. In addition, we can perform a physical exam following a concussion that allows us to check the range of motion and offer the best treatment for spinal subluxations.

Often, the spine can become misaligned when there’s a concussion, especially if whiplash is also involved. As a result, your neck muscles can become too loose around your neck, and this causes the instability that many concussion sufferers see. However, with proper alignment, the headaches will subside, and you’ll feel back to your old self before the concussion.
