What Is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

The chiropractors at West Omaha Chiropractic & Sports Injury Clinic of Omaha, NE, offers a myriad of chiropractic services to provide pain relief from their patients who suffer from debilitating back pain. One of the most safe and effective methods used in spinal decompression therapy, which is used to gently elongate the spine, creating a vacuum that will pull the disc back into its original shape and location within the vertebrae. This decompression therapy is designed to treat:

  • Lower back pain
  • Bulging or herniated discs and disc degeneration
  • Sciatica
  • Joint Arthritis
  • Facet Syndrome

This type of traction therapy is applied to the spine with the purpose of creating theoretical benefits such as creating a negative intradiscal pressure that promotes repositioning or retraction of bulging or herniated discs, as well as the creation of lower pressure within the disc which results in the restoration of nutrients within the disc.

What Occurs During Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy involves spinal stretching using a motorized device or a traction table while lying face up or face down. Computerized equipment is used to provide the gentle distraction of the spinal bones, allowing disc problems to begin healing. By delivering traction, the machine creates therapeutic spinal decompression and will alternate between minimum and maximum levels. This treatment is pain-free and relief is often experienced in the neck and back with the initial treatment.

How Many Treatments Are Required?

The number of treatments required is based on the severity of pain and/or injury that is present in a person's neck or back. A chiropractor at West Omaha Chiropractic & Sports Injury Clinic will work closely with you to create your treatment plan. This therapy program may last as long as a month or up to three months. The frequency of treatments will also be discussed so that they fit into your current lifestyle and schedule.

A small study conducted in 2016 by the Journal of Physical Therapy and Science discovered patients that selected non-surgical decompression therapy experienced lower inflammation levels and less pain than those patients that did not select decompression therapy. This treatment has been proven to provide relief from neck and back pain, spinal stenosis, and other conditions.
